Red Apple and the Case for Paraben Free Lipstick

Chemical contrustion of a paraben

You might have heard the term paraben-free tossed around lately.  What are parabens and why is it important to look for products that do contain parabens?

Parabens are chemicals that are used as preservatives in many cosmetics and toiletries.  Parabens are used because they have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.  Manufacturers need a way to make sure their products will last a long time before becoming overrun with bacteria, mold or fungus.

Products that contain parabens are things like cosmetics (lipsticks, mascara, etc) shampoos, shaving gel, personal lubricants, toothpaste, moisturizers, and food additives.  It’s basically in everything!

Parabens have recently come into some controversy.  Doctors have found parabens in small amounts in breast cancer tumors.  Parabens are also thought to mimic (albeit, slightly) estrogen, the hormone that is a main player in causing breast cancer. This has raised the question, “are parabens causing breast cancer?”  It has many people scared, and scientists are trying to find a link that proves that the Parabens we use in all of these products are the same Parabens found in cancer tumors.   So far no link has been found.  But, to us, that does not mean there isn’t one!

There is a UK study on the link of parabens and breast cancer which is led by molecular biologist, Philippa Darbre.  She has sampled 20 breast cancer tumors, and of those 18 contained parabens.  According to an article from The Daily Mail (click here for the full article), Dr. Darbre remains steadfast in her belief that there is a link between breast cancer and parabens and that the research must continue.
