Frito-Lay Lab Tests for Gluten-Free ceritfication

With all the talk about national food brands offering gluten-free options and the controversy whether or not they are truly gluten-free (see Domino’s), it’s refreshing to see a company make a real effort to show their products are safe for everyone to eat.

Frito-Lay has announced that they are going certify that their potato chips test in a lab gluten-free before they are labeled as such.   They are not changing the way they manufacture and prepare their chips; they really don’t have to.  The main ingredients of Frito-Lay are potatoes, which are naturally gluten-free anyway.

Frito-Lay could put gluten-free on their packaging, but instead they decided to take the extra step and developed a gluten-free validation process for testing their ingredients before they go into the food and they test the finished product.  They are doing so by working side by side with the Food Allergy Research and Resource Program and the Celiac Disease Foundation.  The tests will make sure that the food contains less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten.  That’s the limit imposed by the FDA for gluten-free labeling.

This announcement is timely.  Gluten-free products have been hitting the shelves in full force in recent weeks.  How many of them are truly gluten-free?  How many prepare their foods so as to avoid cross-contamination (how many know how important separate food prep areas is important)?  How many of food companies lab test their food to verify it truly is gluten free?  Most importantly, how many companies are gluten-free because it’s healthy and not because it’s the latest fad?  That last sentence is the pertinent one because there are a lot of food companies that have suddenly come up with a gluten-free item because it’s the “in” thing to do., not because they care about the Celiac community.  Frito-Lay is taking the initiative to build trust with their customers that their products are safe and gluten-free.  They also serve as a reminder to us all just how important it is to read those labels!  Even on products that say “gluten-free.”

We at Red Apple Lipstick want you to know that we lab-test all our products for gluten.  They do not make it in our inventory unless they come back from the lab certified 100% gluten-free.  Our customers’ safety is our number one priority.

I must admit, this is pretty cool. I try to eat healthy most of the time, but for those occasions where you needs chips and dip, it’s great to know that Frito-Lay’s gluten free really is gluten-free.
